The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Roopam Singh today sentenced a drug peddler to 10-year imprisonment in an NDPS case. The court convicted Raj Adhikari, a resident of Dimapur in Nagaland, and sentenced him to 10 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him.
According to the prosecution case argued by Kailash Chander, Special Public Prosecutor for the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the case was registered on May 28, 2013, when NCB sleuths got secret information that 36-year-old Raj Adhikari was involved in drug trafficking and was coming from Guwahati via Delhi to Kullu while carrying 6.6 kg opium in a Ford Ikon car.
The NCB laid a trap and stopped the Ford Ikon car bearing a Delhi registration number. A search of the car led to the recovery of opium, which was sealed in eight packets. The accused was then arrested.
“It stands proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was found in conscious possession of 6.6 kg of opium without having any licence or permit, which was being transported in a Ford Ikon car,” said the court.
“The accused stands convicted for possessing 6.6 kg of opium. Such a heavy quantity amounts to commercial quantity in view of Section 18 (b) of the NDPS Act. Evidence on record satisfies the judicial conscience,” said the court.
