DETAINED CONG WORKER DIES, PARTY RAPS POLICE

Amritsar June 21:
A 60-year-old Congress worker from Majitha, Babbu Rattan Lal, who was among the Congress workers detained yesterday by the Amritsar police for holding a protest in front of SDM office, died of heart attack after reaching home late last night. The Congress held a protest in front of the police post at Majitha before his cremation.
He was reportedly taken to Sarai Amanat Khan police station along with the other protesters. “His demand for water was rejected and he was dropped at a distant place from where he had to walk home. He could not bear the strain and collapsed on reaching home,” said district Congress (Rural) head S J S Lally Majithia.
Acting president of the state Congress Mohinder Singh Kaypee attended the cremation and demanded an inquiry into the matter. “It is a violation of human rights and the cops who are responsible for his death should be arrested,” said Kaypee, alleging that the police were working at the behest of cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia.
SSP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, however, said the deceased was an old man and died of heart attack and the police were “not at all responsible for his death”.
