A cloudy morning led Delhi to experience its highest minimum temperature for the month of June in the past 15 years on Wednesday. The morning temperature went up to 34.2 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal while the maximum settled at 42.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal a difference of only 8.6 degrees between the morning and afternoon temperature.

Met officials attributed the rise in temperature to two factors, a cloudy morning and the approach of a western disturbance. "Due to the presence of moisture in the air, Delhi was quite cloudy in the morning and the clouds did not allow the heat to escape. On the other hand, the western disturbance that is approaching the western Himalayas has also brought about a change in wind direction and made them southwesterly. These winds are very warm and cause the temperature to rise. However, this time we are also expecting the WD to bring some rain for Delhi so there should be some respite soon,'' said B P Yadav, director, IMD.

The last time that the minimum temperature was higher than Wednesday's was in 1995 when the minimum touched 34.6 degrees Celsius on June 18. June's average maximum and minimum temperatures are 39.3 degrees and 28.3 degrees respectively. The month witnesses an average of 54.9 mm rainfall.

Met officials said that the weather was expected to undergo a drastic change in and around the capital shortly. "The western disturbance that is approaching will bring isolated rain, thundershowers and dust storms over Punjab, Haryana, western UP and Rajasthan during the next one day and will then intensify. The weekend is likely to see widespread rain over many parts of west and northwest areas once the cyclone Phet moves towards Gujarat in another day or so,'' said a Met official.

"I walked from Pragati Maidan to ITO in the afternoon around 3.30 pm. It was quite pleasant unlike the past few days as it wasn't quite sunny,'' said Taruna Khattri, a student.
