LITTLE KITTEN
Dehradun, May 14 (ANI): Scores of Sikhs came out on the streets on Sunday to protest against a traffic cop's manhandling of Sikh driver's turban and throwing it on the ground over a traffic violation.
Gurjit Singh, the victim alleged that the policeman also pushed him around and hit him with the butt of a rifle.
"He took off my turban and threw it on the ground. Then he hit me with the butt of his rifle. Others on the road saved me. The traffic jam will continue until the traffic police officer is suspended," said Singh.
Top police officials have offered an apology and vowed to take action against the erring policeman.
"We have been told that a policeman had misbehaved with a local. We are investigating the matter. The guilty officer will be reprimanded and suspended immediately. The person's turban should not have been thrown on the ground. We know the turban is a matter of identity and pride for a Sikh, and the policeman will duly apologise for the incident," said N S Napchyal, the District Superintendent of Police. For Sikhs, turban is a symbol of sovereignty, dedication, self-respect, courage and piety. ANI)
