Most parts of north India Tuesday received moderate to heavy rainfall causing mercury to dip sharply as flash floods triggered by cyclone 'Phet' inundated low-lying areas of Rajasthan.
Nearly 300 people of Lathi village in Jaisalmer district were evacuated while rail and road traffic continued to be affected due to heavy rains lashing the desert state since the last two days.
However, the Met Office said the tropical cyclone 'Phet' has weakened towards the evening and the situation in western parts of the state is improving. The state government convened a high-level meeting in which Collectors of several districts were asked to prepare a relief package to victims who suffered heavy loss of crop and properties.
Since last evening, Bikaner recorded a rainfall of 58 mm followed by Churu 45 mm, Pilani 36 mm and Phalodi 18 mm respectively. Mercury fell sharply as the minimum in Jaipur and Bikaner came down to 19.1 C and 19.4 C respectively.
Heavy rains also drenched Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab, affecting normal life.
Union Territory Chandigarh recorded 83.6 mm rainfall since last evening as low-lying areas were flooded. In Haryana Panchkula and Ambala received 75 mm and 47.8 mm rainfall respectively while Mohali in Punjab recorded 80 mm rainfall.
In the national capital Delhi, overnight rains brought down the minimum temperature to a cool 22.1 degree Celsius, the lowest for the month of June in the past three years.
In Himachal Pradesh, widespread rains continued to lash the plains while upper reaches experienced mild snowfall, resulting in the mercury nosediving by several notches. The maximum in capital Shimla fell to 13.4 degree Celsius against yesterday's 22.2 C, forcing people to pullout light woollens.
