The Cop Smashed His Typewriter, This Old Manís Only Source Of Income

Name Ė Kishan Kumar. He has been doing Hindi typing for 35-yrs outside General Post Office(GPO), Lucknow.

Working 10 hours a day on his old typewriter, which cost him Rs 5000, he used to get 50Rs per day. But he could never imagine that the typewriter which earned him his bread and butter could not take a kick from a sick policeman.

After the first blow he collected the parts and put it back together, and begged for mercy as he was cursed with the sin called ĎPovertyí. But the shining stars on the shoulders of the police officer were so bright that they blinded him and he couldnít see the shine of stars dripping down the poor manís eyes. He snatched the typewriter from the poor man with his powerful arms and threw it smashing it into pieces. It shattered with the dreams of poor man.

65-year-old Krishna Kumar started collecting his dream wrapped in pieces of that typewriter. But every part of it cried like him, not able to get together. When we asked him now what was he going to do, he turned towards us, eyes filled with water and flowing pieces of dreams in it, and said that he had been doing that job for the past 35 years. He has seen the world change before his eyes; maybe it was time to change himself. Now Hindi was no more needed for the country like his old typewriter. He kept looking at the pieces of the typewriter with the shattered dreams in his eyes.

Many people have come forward to help the old person. The Cop has been suspended just a few hours back.

A Good Journalism, A Responsible Social Media, Few Concerned Citizens & Humanity Triumphs

Who says change can’t be brought by social media and good journalism? Yesterday, the story of a policeman smashing the typewriter of an old man was reported by Ashutosh Tripathi of Dainik Bhaskar. In a few hours, it revolutionised the whole social media. We also shared the story with our community members.

This story is a fine example of courageous Journalism. Even after the Policeman asked the photographer to delete the photos he had clicked, he refused to do so. According to a reporter of Dainik Bhaskar, they didn’t put a watermark on the image and uploaded it directly on the Social Media because they wanted the story to reach the larger audience and action could be taken.

After the story got posted on social media, help started pouring in. Many asked the address and phone no. of the old man, so that they could help in anyway possible. The state government also got aware of the issue and provided a new typewriter to the old man. SSP Lucknow Mr. Rajesh Pandey and DM Lucknow Mr. Raj Shekhar themselves took the step to meet the old man and hand him over his new typewriter.

Our policemen also need to be a little sensitive while handling such issues. The world can be a much better place with a little more love towards another human being. And everyone can give a little love, to get a little love of their own.

We sincerely thank Ashutosh and Dainik Bhaskar. Kudos to everyone who came forward to offer help to the old man. When we ‘act’, things change. It is on us to make a story important and bring some changes through it.
