Amid the growing popularity of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress stands divided in the district. Many senior leaders from the area did not attend the rally addressed by former CM Capt Amarinder Singh and CLP Leader Sunil Jakhar at Baghapurana in the district, last week.
Senior party leader and former minister Darshan Brar, who until a few days ago was a loyalist of PPCC chief Partap Bajwa, joined Amarinder’s camp. Thereafter, many senior leaders of the area Dr Malti Thapar, Vijay Sathi, Kaka Sukhjit Singh Lohgarh, Amarjit Rajeana and a few others did not attend the rally. Sathi alleged Brar did not invite him to the rally. Rajeana, an influential leader of the area, was also not invited by Brar.
At a rally organised by Kaka Sukhjit Lohgarh at Dharamkot on August 31, senior party leaders presented a united stand. But within a few days, a rift appeared.
Sources said most senior leaders were not happy with the working style of district president Brar, who has started backing his son Kamaljit Brar in local politics. Many other party loyalists have been unhappy over Brar pursuing his personal agenda. They alleged he was ignoring seasoned party workers at the ground level, while constituting teams to back his son’s candidature from the Baghapurana assembly segment.
Brar is keen on contesting from the Moga assembly constituency in the 2017 poll which is why he has reportedly begun ignoring Sathi who holds influence there.
Sathi said someone was trying the party’s image here. “It is high time that party leadership takes a serious note of all the developments in the party and take steps to tackle the issue,” Sathi added.
