The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) today announced to move an adjournment motion in the Vidhan Sabha on Monday to draw the government’s attention towards the plight of the farming community.
CLP leader Sunil Jakhar alleged cotton growers had been financially ruined as the government failed to check whitefly attack. He said the decision was taken in consultation with party legislators. He said the Congress had submitted a list of principal issues to discuss on the floor of the House, but till date there had been no response from the Speaker.
He said: “The farmers are in for testing times. Overcast skies have left paddy growers worried. Wheat growers had already suffered heavily due to poor purchase and payment arrangements. The supply of sub-standard insecticides failed to check whitefly attack on cotton that caused huge loss to more than 65 per cent of the farmers in Malwa belt. But regretfully, the ruling party has no time even to console the families of farmers who have committed suicide.”
Jakhar alleged the Agriculture Department headquarters was practically working as the Akali Dal’s office. The Centre in the past had earmarked funds to boost crop diversification, but the department officials remained busy in Sangat Darshans or paying visits to the political bosses. Farmers were not getting remunerative prices for their produce and they have to resort to distress sale as even MSP is not assured, he alleged.
He said they would not hesitate to take to streets if sufficient compensation for cotton loss was not given.
