Amritsar June 10:

A day before the MC polls, police resorted to lathicharge after the BJP and Congress workers clashed at Rani Ka Bagh in ward No 52.

BJP supporters led by party candidate Meenu Sehgal alleged that Sanjeev Tangri, the Congress candidate from the ward, along with his supporters, was distributing ladies dress material to woo the voters. The BJP supporters allegedly raised slogans against Tangri outside his house. Following this the Congressmen raised slogans against the BJP men.

As the situation became tense, a police party, including DCP Satpal Joshi, reached the spot. As the BJP and Congress supporters clashed, the police resorted to lathicharge in order to scatter them. The BJP supporters, who were not happy with the police’s role, also raised slogans against the police. Sehgal alleged that Congressmen were distributing material to woo voters and police were not taking action against them. On the other hand, the Congressmen denied the allegations.

District Youth Congress chief Vikas Soni, who reached the spot, said, “The BJP supporters are making baseless allegations. They entered Tangri’s house and ransacked it.” ADCP City 2 AS Powar, who reached the spot, said, “BJP supporters have levelled allegations and we will investigate them.” Some Congress supporters were also detained. In another incident in ward No 8, supporters of independent candidate Vipul Mehra staged a dharna after someone allegedly damaged his vehicle.

Mehra, who is a BJP rebel, alleged that when his wife Pooja was travelling in the vehicle near Medical Enclave, someone threw a stone at the vehicle. He alleged that it was the handiwork of the BJP supporters. He registered a complaint with the police.
