SECUNDERABAD: An Intermediate second-year student of Narayana Girls Residential and Day Scholars' College in Kukatpally jumped to death from the fourth floor of her college building on Monday.

K Deepthi, 17, was a native of Proddutur in Kadapa. She finished her Intermediate first year from a local college in Proddutur.

Her parents Mohan Reddy and Bharathi wanted their daughter to do well in Eamcet and admitted Deepthi at Narayana College Residential Girls campus in Kukatpally on Sunday.

According to police, Deepthi was against staying at the hostel. “Her parents who were planning to leave for Proddutur stayed back as she had fever on Monday,” Kukatpally inspector of police V Surender Reddy said.
Deepthi's parents spent time with her on Monday evening till 8 pm at the college-cum-hostel and convinced her to stay at the hostel as they thought it would be good for her future. Her father left for Proddutur and her mother stayed at one of their relative's house in the city.

“The study hours of the college ended at 10.20 pm. At 10.30 pm, when the warden was taking a roll call, Deepthi was not found. When they searched for her, they discovered that she was lying in a pool of blood on the ground. We suspect that she jumped from the fourth floor,” Surender Reddy said. Based on a complaint lodged by Deepthi's father, police registered a suspicious death case.

Meanwhile, the student's death exposed how some colleges , in violation of the rules of Board of Intermediate (BIE), are holding summer classes. While the BIE ordered junior colleges to close for summer vacation from March 23 to June 1, several corporate colleges, including Narayana College, were 'offering' extra summer classes for students even during late hours.

The institute was reportedly conducting coaching class for Eamcet along with regular Intermediate classes.
“The coaching classes begin at 8 pm. Students have separate sessions both for engineering and medicine stream. The classes can continue up to 4 pm if the student has a late shift,” Narayana Group of Institutions' administrative officer PVRK Murthy told 'TOI'.

However, the college also has compulsory study hours from 4.30 pm to 10.30 pm after which students would go back to their hostels. The college is said to be conducting coaching classes for Eamcet and for students who want to write supplementary exams.

“The colleges are not supposed to conduct classes and should adhere to the schedule. Action will be taken against the management,” BIE secretary M Veerabhadraiah told 'TOI'.
