The city has witnessed a spurt in snatching incidents this year. As many as 131 such cases were reported to the police till August 31 this year as compared to the 75 reported till August 31 in 2014.
Southern sectors are the most snatching-prone areas as maximum incidents have been witnessed there.
Snatchers are on the move, with the UT police turning a blind eye to it. Such regular incidents have instilled fear among residents, especially women, who feel roads are not safe enough to walk alone.
The incidents reported in the wee hours and broad daylight has further raised concerns over the safety of residents.
The two recent incidents in which victims were targeted within the premises of their house have left everybody shocked. While the gold chain of an elderly woman was snatched from the lawn of her house in Sector 33, in another case, the snatchers targeted the victim at the main door of her home as she was entering it.
Although the snatchings have been reported across the city, total 63 cases out of 131 incidents have been reported from the Southern sectors comprising four police stations, including Sector 31, Sector 34, Sector 36 and the Sector 39 police station.
The areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Sector 34 police station have witnessed 30 snatching incidents which is highest among all the police stations.
As per the police records, black Pulsar motorcycles were used in a majority of incidents, following which the patrolling parties and beat staffs had been asked to check the movements of the particular make of motorcycles in their area to check snatchings.
