The Indian Railways will soon run trains between New Delhi and Chandigarh at a semi-high speed of 200 kmph, as French companies are already on job to complete the technical requirements in a year’s time. Apart from this, experts from France are also working on converting the Ambala and Ludhiana stations into model ones.
Besides, several other foreign collaborations are also in place for the Indian Railways to embark on an ambitious path for total modernisation in operation and station development. Japan’s assistance is being taken in solutions for critical technological challenges facing the Railways, including running of trains during foggy winter.
“France has expertise in station development and accordingly, we have assigned them the two stations of Ludhiana and Ambala to develop in a manner that they become major hub and attraction. Japan is also going to help the Railways capture the land value in a manner that it becomes a major source of revenue,” said a senior official of the Railway Board.
Incidentally, the Railways has roped in France for “speed enhancement” on the New Delhi-Chandigarh route to run 200-kmph trains. “France is conducting an execution study, which is a step ahead of feasibility study, and we actually are looking to unveil the semi-high speed mode on the New Delhi-Chandigarh section in a year’s time,” said the official.
The Railways is also undertaking trials of the Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches being manufactured at Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, to meet the 200 kmph requirements. The LHB coaches are the passenger compartments that have been developed by Linke-Hofmann-Busch of Germany.
“We already have the LHB coaches being manufactured in the country at Kapurthala and Raebareli, which are designed to clock a speed of 180 kmph. With a few changes, we are seeking if they could clock the 200 kmph speed,” added the official.
