CHENNAI:

Security has been tightened at the Chennai Central railway station following an intelligence input warning about a possible attack by a suicide bomber.

The input was forwarded by the railway board and also the city police commissioner's office. Railway Protection Force (RPF) has shut down the Wall Tax Road entrance of the station that leads to platform one. The premium car parking close to the main building of the railway station will remain closed for a couple of days.

More security personnel have been posted at the station and passengers are put to frisking and baggage checks, said an RPF official. The railway station is protected round-the-clock by armed guards. Closed-circuit cameras have been installed on all platforms and concourse areas, while all entrances and exits are fitted with metal detectors.

"The enhanced security measures will remain for a couple of days," said chief public relations officer VJ Accamma.

On Sunday, a call traced to Spain had warned the city police of a terror strike at the station. The alert also coincides with slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's death anniversary. Rajiv Gandhi's death anniversary also falls this week.
