Amritsar June 27:

chdnewsdesk@hindustantimes.com Saying that addiction to alcohol and drugs was fast damaging the social fabric of Punjab, Health Minister Luxmi Kanta Chawla stressed the need to make Punjab a dry state on the lines of Gujarat.

Addressing a gathering dur- ing a state-level function organ- ised at Ajnala on the occasion of International Anti-Drugs Day, Chawla lauded the health services being provided at Hoshiarpur as the best among the 600 districts in India.

She said that in keeping with the aim of making Punjab a dry state, the Health Department would organise plays in rural areas to sensitise the public on the ravages of drug abuse. “Since seeing is believing, these plays would help people see for themselves the damaging effect the drugs can have on their health,“ she said, urging women to come forward and help her realise this dream.

Saying nowadays alcohol formed an important part of every public and private event, Chawla said mothers could play an important role in sensitis- ing their children towards the ill-effects of alcohol and drugs to help them say no to them. Dr Rattan Singh Ajnala, MP, and Dr J.P. Singh, Director, Health and Family Welfare, were among others who addressed the gathering.
