It would now be extremely difficult for offenders to escape the legal authorities after violating traffic rules in the city as the city police have decided to install high-definition CCTV cameras at inter- crossings and on arterial roads.
Pictures of the traffic rules violators, along with their vehicles, would be clicked by the high definition CCTV cameras and vehicle numbers would be sent to the traffic police control room.
After verification of the address of the vehicle owner, the challan would be directly sent to the offenders.
The city police have identified 120 spots, including Clock Tower, Subhash Road, Rajpur Road, Chakrata Road, Patelnagar, Subhash Nagar, Araghar, EC Road, Dharampur, Jogiwala, Rispana Bridge, Bindal Bridge, Ashley Hall, Jakhan, Asharodi and Prem Nagar, to install the cameras.
Garhwal IG Sanjay Gunjyal said a couple of plans were in the pipeline to equip the traffic police force with hi-tech communication and other equipments to nab lawbreakers.
The high definition cameras would prove extremely helpful to keep an eye on traffic offenders and to arrest criminals, the IG added.
SSP Sadanand Datte said the city police and the traffic police were regularly conducting awareness campaigns to inform masses about the importance of following traffic rules.
The police kept a tight vigil on underage and drunken driving to check accidents in the city. Hoardings on traffic awareness would be installed at six spots, including four entry points of the city, which are Nanda-ki-Chowki, Jogiwala, ISBT, and Mussoorie diversion, Datte added.
