Car sales maintain momentum in April

Car sales maintained their momentum in the new fiscal as demand remained robust in April on the back of economic growth and attractive lending rates.

Maruti, the biggest carmaker, said sales grew 23% in the domestic market at 80,034 units against 64,857 units sold in April last year.

The company said it small car portfolio — comprising models like Alto, Swift, Ritz and the new-generation Wagon R — had a growth of 20.5% in the month while sales of sedans like Dzire and SX4 was up 41%.

Hyundai also witnessed high demand for its cars and its domestic market sales moved up 28% at 28,501 units against 22,247 units in the same month last year. The growth rates for GM and Ford were particularly high as they added new models to their portfolio.
