With the likely appointment of Capt Amarinder Singh as president of the PPCC, there are also reports that senior leader Ambika Soni will be made chairman of the election campaign committee.
Another senior leader Lal Singh is expected to be made the Leader of the Opposition and Congress Legislature Party (CLP). Amarinder Singh today left for Delhi to have "a final discussion" on state leadership issue with party vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Before leaving for Delhi, Captain met supporters at his residence whom he assured that "good news is round the corner and they should get ready for a decisive battle".
Earlier there were reports that Soni was being considered for the post of PPCC chief. But in changed circumstances, insiders say the leadership is keen to make Soni head of the campaign committee.
The party will appoint at least two MLAs belonging to the SC category at important posts. The frontrunners are Tarlochan Singh Soond and Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, besides Congress MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh.
The leadership, sources say, is trying hard to strike a balance between various groups in the reorganised party structure.
President of the Indian Youth Congress Amrinder Raja Warring is a Jat-Sikh from Gidderbaha (Malwa region). Captain is also Jat-Sikh from Malwa. President of the Punjab Youth Congress is Jat-Sikh from Hoshiarpur (Doaba). Soni is also from Doaba. Lal Singh is from Malwa, but he does not belonged to the Jat community although he is a Sikh.
