Chandigarh May 4:

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Captain Amarinder Singh called for strict vigil against Maoist activities in the State. “The Maoists have started spreading their network in Punjab and the sale of weapons to them was an ominous indication,” said Capt Amarinder.

Welcoming the seizure of weapons with the arrest of arms dealers who were supplying weapons to the Maoists, Capt Amarinder said, he had consistently been maintaining that the Maoists had increased their activities in different parts of the State and now the police had also seized the weapons being supplied to them which had corroborated his stand.

Asking the police to be more vigilant, the PPCC chief said that stringent measures need to be taken to ensure that the Maoist violence does not erupt in Punjab. “Punjab cannot afford another dark phase of violence,” he said, while adding, “Our memories of militancy are too fresh to be forgotten and the impact is still being felt in terms of economic and industrial slide.”

Former Chief Minister said, while the administration needs to be alert and vigilant, at the same time the State needs to take care of the urges and aspirations of the youth particularly those who are educated but unemployed who feel disillusioned and alienated and can easily fall prey to any such designs.
