A 22-year-old weightlifter-turned-cabbie reportedly strangled his lover at her home in Uttam Nagar in west Delhi on Wednesday.
After killing the woman, Sapna, the accused took pictures of the body and took away her valuables from the house to make it look like a robbery.
The accused, Ajay Hooda, drove away in his friend’s white Ford Figo car, believing he had gotten away. But he was intercepted by the northwest district special staff team, led by sub-inspector Ram Manohar, on a tip-off.
When caught, Hooda claimed innocence. But his bloodstained clothes and pictures of the woman’s body in his phone revealed his crime. Hooda broke down and confessed to killing his lover in a fit of rage.
Hooda said he killed Sapna as she had been pressuring him to divorce his wife, whom he had married only a month ago. She asked Hooda to tell his wife and family about their affair, said a police officer.
Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of police (northwest), said the police control room had received information about a woman’s body lying in her Uttam Nagar home. The woman, Sapna, 23, worked in a private company in Nehru Place.
While the Bindapur police launched a probe into the case, the northwest district special staff arrested the killer within three hours of the crime. Sapna’s mobile phones, her jewellery and R 30,000 in cash were recovered from Hooda.
Hooda told the police that he married Pooja after going out with her for three years. Around six months ago, Hooda also began dating Sapna, who had a five-year-old child.
“Around two weeks ago, Sapna learnt that Hooda was married. She began pressuring Hooda to divorce his wife, else she would tell her about their affair. Hooda then decided to get rid of Sapna,” said Singh.
On Wednesday afternoon, an investigator said, Hooda visited Sapna’s house to sort out the issue. Soon, they got into an argument, and Hooda strangled her.
“He then clicked the body’s pictures, covered the corpse with a quilt and destroyed her SIM card. He then stole her mobile phones, other valuables, and fled the crime scene,” the officer said.
The murder took place around 5pm and Hooda was caught around 8pm. For three hours, he was aimlessly driving around west and southwestern parts of the city in the car, the officer said.
