BLAIR TO MEET INDIAN LEADERS ON GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS CUT

New Delhi March 20:
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will meet Indian political and business leaders here on Thursday to urge them to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Blair, now a consultant to The Climate Group, a non-profit organisation funded by corporations and governments from around the world, will launch 'Breaking the Climate Deadlock' initiative to reduce emissions.
The initiative is targeted at governments and business leaders to bridge differences between the developed and developing world on setting new targets for reducing carbon emissions, post the 1997 Kyoto protocol. It aims at garnering political support across developed and developing countries for a framework for an international agreement by 2009 and implementation strategies that will result in greenhouse gas emission reductions.
The Climate Group has convened a set of experts to try to devise a framework capable of getting the developed world, including the US and the developing world, including China and India into a comprehensive deal to tackle climate change. The initiative will work towards breaking the governmental deadlock in achieving a comprehensive long-term international agreement on how to deal with global climate change.
