Though these are early days, there are enough indications that rather than going in for direct elections for the post of president of the state unit, the BJP may opt for a selection process.
During a meeting of the core committee, held on Saturday, led by Uttarakhand state in charge Shyam Jaju and other senior leaders, efforts were on to build a consensus for the selection of presidents for various districts.
“If early indications are to be given a careful read, there are chances that we may adopt a consensus approach and elect office-bearers on the basis of this approach. It will help the party avoid directly pitting one leader against the other for the post of president and also curbing factionalism,” said a senior BJP leader.
Senior leaders said the organisational elections to be held in October-November were important for the BJP as the office-bearers would be entrusted with the task of preparing the party for the Assembly elections, to be held in 2017.
Above all, the party wants to avoid factionalism among various groups in the party.
“Direct elections may bring the differences existing between the senior leaders to the fore and this may prove detrimental for the party that has to face elections and triumph in the 2017 Assembly elections,” added the leader.
While all efforts are on to bring around the leaders, so far Jaju seemed to have achieved some success as party sources said consensus seemedto have emerged on at least five posts of district presidents.
Along with working on achieving a consensus during the meeting of the core committee, the members seemed to have agreed on maintaining pressure on the Congress by demanding a CBI inquiry into the sting operation in which an IAS officer, close to Chief Minister Harish Rawat, was shown purportedly making deals on behalf of the Chief Minister.
Along with the issue of the sting operation, the leaders also agreed to corner the Congress government on the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for providing relief to the 2013 disaster affected people of the state.
A number of people were killed and as many went missing during the natural disaster in the state in 2013.
