Former state BJP president and Shimla MLA Suresh Bhardwaj today demanded a high-powered committee to find out the reasons behind the jaundice outbreak which affected more than 5,000 persons in Shimla and its suburbs. The committee should also explore and suggest measures to prevent such occurrences.
In a statement issued here today, he said despite taking positive steps to alleviate the suffering of the people, the Irrigation and Public Health Department, the Pollution Control Board and the Shimla Municipal Corporation were busy in shifting the blame on one another.
Questioning that how the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor absolved themselves from the responsibility of this disaster, Bhardwaj asked, “Is it not a fact that Rs 250 crore, sanctioned by the Central Government for the improvement of the sewerage system under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), had lapsed due to their indifferent attitude.
Concerned over the tardy progress of the investigation, Bhardwaj said small fries were being rounded up to protect the powerful culprits involved in this episode. He warned the government of dire consequences if something concrete was not done to alleviate the sufferings of the victims. The BJP would launch an agitation if the actual culprits were not booked.
