Mumbai-Even the crime-hardened cops are wincing at the prospect of separating a child from his ‘parents’. A week ago, a beggar couple found an ailing two-year-old boy at an Ulhasnagar skywalk, and began looking after him. However, as the child’s health deteriorated, they took him to the State-run Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar on Saturday, where the doctors, suspecting the couple were not the boy’s parents, questioned them.

After learning about the boy’s history, doctors called the cops.

Investigations revealed that not only did the beggar couple, Shankar and Saku Pillai, save the child, they spent whatever they had on him. They have named him Ganesh, and the kid has grown so attached to them, he cries if separated from them.

The ‘mom’, Saku, said, “I picked up the kid from the skywalk after seeing him cry. I bought him food and waited for his guardians to turn up. Till late night, nobody came to claim him. How could I have just left him at the spot? We took him to our shanty at Sanjay Gandhi Nagar in Ulhasnagar.

The next day, the couple took the child to Ambernath a doctor, who said he was malnourished and infected. He was also running high fever. Over the next few days, the couple fed the boy well, brought him clothes and bathed him daily, spending around Rs 3,000, their entire saving.

Now, Ganesh will be handed over to the Child Welfare Committee, but that is something the police will do with a heavy heart. B T Jadhav, head constable in-charge, Ulhasnagar Railway Station, said the couple deserves high praise for saving the baby. “Guidelines say we must send the child to the welfare committee. Yes, we would have to take the child away from the couple but we are all moved by this incident.”

Interestingly, the Pillai couple gave up their 12-year-old daughter to an institute for destitutes as they were unable to pay for her upbringing. Saku said, “We sent our daughter away so that she can lead a better life. But when we found Ganesh, the joy returned to our lives. He too was in a bad state and needed a mother.”

The couple feels there is little justice in the world. “Where were the cops when the child was crying alone? Now, they want to take him away from us,” said a tearful Saku.
