BEANT SINGH 'KILLER' SEEKS 50-CR DAMAGE

Chandigarh July 19:
For 12 long years, he was branded as a conspirator in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh case. However, relief came for 39-year-old Navjot Singh on July 30, 2007, when the trial court of ADJ Ravi Sondhi acquitted him.
Now, gearing up for another legal battle aimed at seeking Rs 50 crore as compensation for the "harassment and torture" he faced all these years, Navjot filed a civil suit claiming damages from Union of India, Chandigarh administration, Delhi administration and two senior CBI officials in city's district court.
With master's degree in English in his kitty, Navjot was employed in Ranbaxy Laboratories in November 1995, when he was arrested from his Mohali-based home. He was sent to police remand and remained in jail since September 17, 1995 till he was acquitted. Meanwhile, Navjot's name was also dragged in another case at Delhi, but a local court later acquitted him. Navjot was arrested by the CBI that alleged that he is a conspirator in the murder of former CM Beant Singh.
He pleaded that he had suffered not only monetary loss, but also missed out on getting married because of the long time he spent in jail. There was not even an iota of evidence against the plaintiff (Navjot) in the murder case of Beant Singh even for the purpose of arresting him, what to say of putting him to trial. After the arrest of the plaintiff, a number of representations were made to different authorities about his false implication therein without any results, his petition stated.
Along with the suit, which was filed on Friday, Navjot also paid Rs 44,900 as court's fee. Confirming the move, TS Sudan, Navjot's counsel, said, "He has full right to claim damages because the precious time of his life that is youth was spent in jail due to wrong prosecution." Advocate AS Chahal added, "The civil suit will come up for hearing on Saturday before a local court."
Dilawar Singh, who was a human bomb, assassinated the former Punjab chief minister in August 1995. The trial, which took place in Burail jail, got over with a local court convicting five accused Jagtar Singh Hawara, Shamsher Singh, Balwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Lakhwinder Singh and acquitting Navjot Singh.
