Harkirat Singh (41), grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Chandigarh on Sunday by shooting himself in his head with his licensed pistol. Sarpanch from the family's home village Kotli, he was suffering from acute depression, police said.

"My brother was a depression patient undergoing treatment since 1995. Two months ago, he came out of coma after an accident last year," said his cousin and Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu. While Harkirat's elder brother Gurkirat is MLA from Khanna, his father Tej Parkash was a cabinet minister in the 1990s.

Police said Harkirat took out his .33mm pistol and shot himself in the head. His wife was at home at the time of the incident. The family lives in a government house in Chandigarh. Most family members have police security. Bittu has been a Z-plus protectee after Beant Singh was assassinated in 1995.

Two former Congress CMs Capt Amarinder and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal reached the family's home to mourn the death. Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal also mourned Harkirat's death. Harkirat's cremation will take place on Monday.
