Baisakhi, the festival of wheat harvesting and creation of `Khalsa Panth` by tenth Sikh guru, Gobind Singh Ji, was today celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety.
Thousands of devotees took holy dip in sacred Sarovars of historic Gurdwara Sahib here as well as nearby Satluj river to mark the occasion. Several farmers today ceremonially started wheat harvesting. Many offered the first basketfuls/bagfuls of newly thrashed grains at Gurdwaras for langars.
Dishes (Langars), including cooked food, cereals etc, made from the fresh crop, were also presented at Gurdwaras by the devout farmers, especially their womenfolk, as mark of respect. At a few places youngsters were heard singing traditional Baisakhi song `Kankaan Di Mukk Gayi Rakhi, Jatta Aayi Baisakhi` (the care to guard wheat crop had ended as its harvesting had started with the advent of Baisakhi) to the drumbeats of Punjabi folk dance `Bhangra`.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji on this day in 1699 had first baptised five sikhs called `Panj Pyaras` (five beloved ones) by making them partake `Amrit` (nectar) and then taking the same from them for creating Khalsa Panth.
