New Delhi: The noose has started tightening around corporate necks in the controversial 2G spectrum allocation case with a court rejecting bail pleas of five executives yesterday.

Judge O.P. Saini rejected bail pleas of Vinod Goenka, Sanjay Chandra, Gautam Doshi, Hari Nair and Surendra Pipara. All five have been named as co-accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2G spectrum allocation case along with former telecom minister A. Raja, his personal assistant R.K, Chandolia, former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura and Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa.

"I am satisfied that in the case of this magnitude, non arrest of the accused by the police is of no consequence and bail is to be considered as per the facts and circumstances of the case. On the face of it the instant case is that the charges are of grave magnitude."

"There are incriminating evidence on record, CBI has expressed the apprehension that accused may tamper with evidence and influence witness. These apprehensions cannot be dismissed and hence I am not inclined to enlarge [release] the accused on bail," Judge Saini ruled.

Main accused

It wasn't known whether the five would be taken into custody.

The four main accused including Raja are already in judicial custody.

Sanjay Chandra is managing director of Unitech Ltd and Unitech Wireless, Vinod Goenka is managing director of DB Realty and Swan Telecom (now Etisalat), Gautam Doshi is group managing director of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) and Hari Nair and Surendra Pipara are senior vice presidents of ADAG.
