Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called upon the Punjabi community settled all over India and abroad to promote Punjabi language and rich cultural values among young generation that was being detached from it under the impact of westernisation.

Mr Badal was addressing a large gathering of Punjabi intellectuals and academicians from all over the country during the inaugural session of fourth Sarb Bharti Punjabi Conference organised by Punjabi University to commemorate its 50th foundation day here. Mr Badal said that Punjabi Diaspora settled across the globe had started realising today that ''our future generations could only survive by re-adopting our religious values and cultural heritage.''

For the promotion of Punjabi and Punjabiat, Mr Badal stressed the need to inculcate a feeling of pride among the children for being Punjabis, which could only be possible ''if we change our mindset first and start glorifying our culture by practicing its main characteristic of universal brotherhood and start showing utmost respect to our mother tongue Punjabi.'' The Chief Minister also observed that undoubtedly English was universally accepted world over as a link language. ''We should give due recognition to it but not at the cost and status of our mother tongue.''
