New Delhi: A TV yoga celebrity and other civic activists in India are escalating their use of hunger strikes as a way to press the government to take action against corruption.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev is entering his fifth day of fasting on Wednesday as he demands that the government seek the return of billions of dollars stashed abroad by companies and rich Indians avoiding taxes.

Social worker Anna Hazare, who seized national attention with a four-day hunger strike in April, is holding a one-day fast in New Delhi.

Hazare says he will continue participation in a government-appointed committee drafting legislation for a corruption watchdog.

The activists' demands have captivated national attention in a country reeling from several high-level corruption scandals.
