The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has proposed setting up 15 new industrial clusters under the public-private partnership model in Punjab.
Each cluster is proposed to accommodate about 2,000 units and provide direct or indirect employment to more than 5 lakh people. In addition, the Punjab government plans to upgrade 20 existing industrial clusters in the state. Releasing an Assocham study on "Cluster Development for Inclusive Growth in Punjab", the chairman of the chamber's Entrepreneur's Development Council, Babu Lal Jain, and National Secretary General D S Rawat said the total funds required to provide basic and essential infrastructure to these clusters will be about Rs 500 crore.
The Assocham representatives said the funds could be mobilised through the PPP route, adding that the clusters would contribute 10 per cent to the state exchequer's annual revenue once implemented.
