ARMED ROBBERS LOOT RS 37 LAKH FROM SBI VAN IN AMRITSAR

Amritsar June 4:
Striking at will for the second time within a week, armed robbers hijacked the cash van of the State Bank of India and looted Rs 37 lakh in broad daylight here.
Five car-borne robbers drove off the van carrying the cash at gunpoint after shooting at gunman Dayal Singh who sustained injuries. He has been admitted to the Mahajan Hospital here and is recovering. The incident has panicked the citizens and a sense of insecurity prevails in the city. A massive hunt has been launched in and around the city to nab the robbers.
Officials of the State Bank of India said that the incident occurred at 11.30 am. Five unidentified armed robbers who came in an Indica car with red beackon, fired at the gunman from close range and took away the cash van containing the cash. The van had come to the bank branch in Bhagtanwala. The money had been brought from a private financial firm and was to be delivered to the bank.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunman posted at the ICICI Bank nearby tried to open fire at the robbers but his gun got jammed. Half an hour after the incident, police recovered the cash van the robbers had abandoned in the village of Boru, about four kilometres away from Amritsar. But the cash was missing.
It may be recalled that on May 28 last, four car-borne unidentified robbers had made an unsuccessful attempt to loot the cash van of the ICICI Bank. Incidentally, the van was not carrying cash. The robbers escaped with a bag containing tools meant to repair the ATM machines, mistaking it for the cash bag. In another incident in Patiala district last week, armed robbers had looted Rs.14 lakh from farmers who were returning after selling land.
