While the state government is yet to complete the verification of the degrees of the Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers, nearly 10,000 of them are awaiting regularisation of their services after completing five years.
“The verification process began in June this year. Nearly 65,000 ReTs across the state submitted their degree certificates with their respective Chief Education Officers, designated as the Nodal Officers for the verification process. The government had promised to complete the process in seven days, but it has been over six months and we are yet to hear anything from the government,” said Farooq Ahmed, chairman of the J&K ReT Association.
“We want to hear from the government how many ReTs have acquired degrees from shady institutes,” Farooq added.
He said the government had kept the files of nearly 10,000 ReTs, awaiting regularisation, pending till the verification process was complete.
“Anger is brewing among the ReT teachers over the government’s delay in completing the verification process and we were contemplating to come on roads,” he said.
The government has imposed a blanket ban on recruitment of ReTs till the verification process is complete. The order for the verification of dubious degrees was given by the state government following the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court which asked it to conduct a screening test of those teachers who are in possession of suspicious testimonials.
A senior official of the Education Department said the process of verification of the degrees obtained through study centres and distance mode was on. “The process will take some time,” he said.
The official said the regularisation of the ReTs who had completed five years of service would begin soon. “A cabinet memo has been prepared and the ReTs who have obtained degree from study centres and distance mode will have to appear for the screening test for their regularisation,” the official said.
The Rehbar-e-Taleem teachers are appointed on a temporary basis for five years. The scheme was introduced by the government in 2000. The ReT teachers are paid a consolidated pay for five years without the benefits enjoyed by the government employees. After serving for five years, they are made permanent and their salary brought on a par with that of regular teachers.
