CHANDIGARH: After research into Punjabis who settled in the UK in the 1950s and 60s, Dr Taylor, reader in international development or sociology, department of social sciences and languages, faculty of arts, design and social sciences, Northumbria University, UK, concluded that all's not well with the seemingly flourishing community.
Speaking at a lecture titled, "The Diasporic Pursuit of Home: A transnational Punjabi community," Taylor said a large number of Punjabis moved to the UK in the 1950s and 60s, intending to come back after making money. Many of them displayed their prosperity by building sprawling mansions back in their native villages in Punjab. But despite the money and the elite NRI tag, they found themselves anchorless. The Punjab that they left decades ago has transformed, leaving them feeling like aliens. As for the UK, they never looked upon the country as home in the first place.
