Mumbai: A new taxiway will be built at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) to improve the overall airside efficiency, said an airport official.

"The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has decided to construct a new taxiway between Taxiway E1 and E3 for CSIA's secondary runway 14/32 for aircraft to vacate the runway, thus reducing runway occupancy time," said Anindita Sinha, spokesperson, MIAL, that runs Mumbai's airport.

She said the construction will not impact flight operations as CSIA's primary runway 09/27 will continue for operations and take the maximum load of arrivals and departures.

To facilitate this infrastructure work, the secondary runway will be closed for flight operations from October 10, this year to January 20, 2012.

In case of heavy rains, fog or any other problem, the use of the secondary runway would take a restoration time of 48 hours.

The construction and closure has been decided after discussions with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Air Traffic Control and airlines, she added.
