New Delhi April 25:

The opposition parties have welcomed, albeit a bit cautiously, the arrest of Suresh Kalmadi in connection with irregularities in giving contracts related to the Commonwealth Games , held last year in the national capital.

In his first reaction, Bhartiya Janata Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, “It is a belated but a welcome step, but the question is how much proof can be collected by the CBI unless the Shunglu commitee report is handed over to it.” “We will watch now, how the CBI proceeds,” he said.

The Shunglu Committee, formed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in its report had slammed Delhi Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikhsit and some others for "delays and losses" in infrastructure projects for the Commonwealth Games. The Union Home Ministry is studying the Shunglu Committee report on alleged irregularities in executing various infrastructure projects related to the Commonwealth Games by the Delhi government.

The report, running into three volumes, was later referred to the Home Ministry by the Prime Minister's Office for further action. The PMO directed the Ministry to reply to queries raised in the Shunglu report on works done by the Delhi government. Pressing for action on the Shunglu panel report, Javadekar rued that, as far as the way it was organised, the Commonwealth Games brought to shame India, he said, “It is a case of too little too late. But everybody should face the music.”

On t5he other hand, Communist Party of India’s D Raja said that the arrest of Kalmadi suggests that law is taking its own course in the country and hence it is not surprising; it was expected. “Let us see, they have arrested a few people; will have wait and see what next step the government takes,” he added.
