A loaded truck Wednesday crushed six people to death and left one seriously injured on National Highway No.1 here.
The truck coming from Jalandhar and going to Ludhiana had just crossed Flyover near Sugar Mill and was going towards the next chowk when it went out of control and hit an Auto, a bike and the pedestrians crushing people riding the two vehicles.
A source said, five people were killed on the spot while one succumbed to his injuries later. Badly crushed and mutilated bodies were lying on the road opposite to bus stand located on NH-1, the source said.
Those killed have been identified as Tinku and Pardeep, the two youths who were going to Ludhiana on their bike. Vijay Kumar Kala, the 45 year old driver of the auto rickshaw was also crushed to death. A youth Dharminder Kumar (24) who was going on his motorcycle was also killed. Lakshman Kumar, a48-year old man was also among the deceased.
Two women who were about to cross the road were also hit by the truck. While Prabhat was injured a woman in her sixties died but could not be identified till the filing of this report.
The unfortunate incident happened around 3.45 pm.
The driver of the truck tried to escape but was nabbed by people and handed over to police.
Traffic on national highway remained suspended for quite some time and had to be diverted to service lanes.
