Mohammad Akhlaq’s Murder Accused Given Martyr Stature

A controversy is embroiling in Dadri of Uttar Pradesh, after villagers on Wednesday refused to cremate the body of 22-year-old Ravi Sisodia, aka Robin, one of seventeen accused in the Dadri lynching case of Mohammad Akhlaq. Ravi died at Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital in Delhi on Tuesday of kidney disease and respiratory failure. Tension escalated as his coffin reached the village draped in a tricolour, as people claimed that he had been martyred protecting “Hindu values”. Ravi’s family cried foul and denied his death report calling this to be a planned murder by the jail staff.
Ravi’s family members, who on September 30 submitted an application in the court, on his behalf, stating he was suffering from chikungunya, now maintains that he was ‘perfectly normal’, reports The Hindu.

No evidence of cow slaughter by Akhlaq’s family: Police
As per The Hindu, Almost three months after the Uttar Pradesh police booked the family of Mohammad Akhlaq from Bishara village for cow slaughter, officials investigating the case have concluded that there was no evidence to prove that a cow was ever slaughtered by Akhlaq and his family. The police are likely to close the case and file a closure report in the Surajpur Court.

Demands of those who attended funeral

Ravi’s family is now demanding a Rs 1 crore solatium for his death and a government job for Ravi’s wife. Other than this, they are demanding a CBI probe into Ravi’s murder, action against the jailer and immediate release of all the other 17 accused. They are also seeking the arrest of the deceased Akhlaq’s brother Jaan Mohammad in a cow slaughter case. They accused police of acting under state government pressure in the case. BJP leader Sadhvi Prachi also addressed the crowd of over 500 people who were making such demands. Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate N P Singh said the state government would give its consent for a CBI probe if the deceased’s family is not satisfied with the ongoing inquiry. Even Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the deceased murder accused Ravi’s wife Pooja.
Ravi was among the 18 youths arrested for allegedly lynching Akhlaq and injuring his son Danish over allegations of slaughtering a cow and storing its meat for consumption on September 28 last year.
