Ludhiana September 7:
Entering the world of crime is easy but difficult to leave. And this is what happened with Rattan Singh, 80, of Shimlapuri, who after being released a year back in a smuggling case was again arrested with 6 kg heroin from the city by a team of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.
The team, comprising officials of Delhi and Ludhiana, also arrested driver Puran Singh near Satluj bridge toll barrier on the Ludhiana-Jalandhar highway. According to information, both the accused had collected the consignment from Fatehgarh Churian on Friday evening and were on their way to Chandigarh via Ludhiana in an Indica when they were intercepted. Six packets of heroin weighing a kg each were seized.
Singh had been into smuggling since 1994 when he was caught with 50 gold biscuits and 12 kg heroin. Though he tried to sever ties with his bosses in Afghanistan, but they managed to trap him because of the help they had rendered to his family when he was in jail. The sober-looking man with his white beard was the obvious choice as few would doubt his credibility.
