6-month jail for SGPC school officer

Additional District and Sessions Judge Sunita Kumari Sharma today awarded six months’ imprisonment to SGPC school education deputy director Harjit Kaur and her husband Jagjit Singh in an NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) case.They have been fined Rs 10,000 each.

Harjit Kaur, then principal of SGPC-run Bhai Nand Lal Public School at Anandpur Sahib, and her husband were travelling in a car on July 23, 2009. They were stopped at Nangal Chowk by the then Ropar SHO (city) Manvir Singh Bajwa. A packet with 1 kg of opium was recovered from the car.
Jagjit Singh was booked under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act. No challan was filed against Harjit Kaur. During the trial, the SHO told the court that Harjit Kaur too was in the car and subsequently, she was made a co-accused.
