5 of family killed in accident

Five members of a family were killed and two seriously injured in a collision between DMU and a jeep at unmanned railway crossing near Pajjian village on Jalandhar-Ferozepur section in the district this morning.

The deceased were identified as Sarabjit Kaur (45), her son Tirath (22), Bhajan Kaur (60), Zora Singh(12) and Manjit Kaur (27). The seriously injured, identified as Surjit Singh and his daughter Amandeep Kaur, were admitted to a private hospital at Jalandhar. Police said that all the victims belonged to Bhanolanga village and were going to Ibban village near Jalandhar to attend a Bhog ceremony of a relative when the accident occurred near Kol Talwandi unmanned railway crossing due to alleged negligence of jeep driver.

Kapurthala Station Superintendent Ashok Kumar when contacted said that DMU-5JF was going to Ferozepur from Jalandhar and it crossed the Kapurthala railway station at 0945 hours and after its halt at Hussainpur railway station it met with accident in between Hussainpur and Pajjian railway crossing. He said that front portion of the train was also damaged and the train was stranded there resulting in the blockade of railway traffic on Kapurthala-Sultanpurlodhi section for two hours.

The driver of DMU took the train back to Hussainpur railway station after making minor repairs. He said that senior railway officers from Jalandhar and Ferozepur division had reached the spot to inquire into the rail accident. Police registered a case in this connection.
