The police today busted two gangs that were involved in the smuggling and circulation of fake Indian currency notes (FICNs) in the region.
Interestingly, some members of the gangs who were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in the smuggling of FICNs, had developed contacts with Pakistan-based smugglers through the Pakistan nationals who had been lodged in the Ferozepur Central Jail some time ago. Some gang members had also been lodged in the Ferozepur Central Jail a few months ago. In the jail, they met some Pakistan nationals who provided them mobile phone numbers of Pakistan-based smugglers and got them into the business of smuggling and circulating FICNs.
Apart from arresting five members of these two gangs, the police also managed to recover FICNs worth over Rs 9.5 lakh. The operation against these gangs was launched jointly by the local CIA police station and Zira police station after a tip-off. Sarbjit Singh, in charge, CIA police station, and Palwinder Singh, SHO, Zira police station, led the operation. Kaustab Sharma, district police chief, said that three members of a gang, who were identified as Malkit Singh, Makhan Singh and Balwant Singh, were arrested while they were going on two motorcycles to deliver FICNs worth Rs 1.45 lakh to some customers, whose identity has not yet been disclosed by them.
Two members of another gang identified as Jagtar Singh Tari and Joga Singh, who were also using a motorcycle to deliver FICNs worth more than Rs 8 lakh were arrested by another police team. Another miscreant identified as Sukha, who was an associate of Tari and Joga, managed to escape the police net. Kaustab Sharma said that it was being suspected that these suspects had brought FICNs from Pakistan to India from a point located on the Indo-Pak border in Mamdot region.
