PATIALA: A local court here on Monday sentenced Police Constables Sukhwant Singh and Kanwaljit Singh to three year's rigorous imprisonment and fine for criminal conspiracy and abduction of one Avtar Singh, a resident of Phase-IV, Mohali on March 7, 1992.
The Additional Sessions Judge, Patiala, B.S. Sidhu also ordered that out of the fine amount of Rs.12,000/- imposed on both the convicted police officials, Rs.10,000/- is to be paid to the wife of Avtar Singh.
The case was registered on January 19, 1995 u/s 363, 364, 365 IPC against Inspector Gurjit Singh, Constable Sukhwant Singh, Constable Kanwaljit Singh and former Police Home Guard Anil Kumar on the orders of the High Court of Punjab & Haryana, Chandigarh passed on the petition filed by Inderjit Kaur, wife of Avtar Singh. It was alleged that Avtar Singh was picked up from his house in Mohali by Inspector Gurjit Singh, formerly Sub-Inspector, SHO, P.S. Sadar, Bathinda along with his police party comprising Constables Sukhwant Singh, Kanwaljit Singh and former Police Home Guard Anil Kumar on March 7, 1992 and since then his whereabouts are not known.
CBI filed a charge sheet in the case on April 17, 1999 against Inspector Gurjit Singh, Constable Sukhwant Singh, Constable Kanwaljit Singh and former Police Home Guard Anil Kumar. Anil Kumar was declared Proclaimed Offender on May 1, 2007 and Inspector Gurjit Singh (now DSP) was declared Proclaimed Offender on August 17, 2007.
The judgement awarding three year jail term to both the convicted police officials was delivered on Tuesday.
