New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram amid the raging 2G scam controversy, saying the head of the government was living in denial.
Addressing a press conference here, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said the government was trying to protect Chidambaram whose name has figured in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
“Chidambaram is equally liable as A Raja, as he had full knowledge of 2G spectrum allocation,” Swaraj said.
She sought to know from the government why it is protecting its ministers involved in corruption.
“Where is the government’s commitment to fight corruption,” she asked, adding the PM has again defended corrupt ministers.
“If mid-term polls happen, it will be because of their own doing,” the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said, reacting to PM’s remarks yesterday that the Opposition was trying to force elections.
She added that the allegations levelled against the government on 2G scam were based on CAG report. “We didn’t make the allegations,” she added.
Swaraj also hit out at the CBI and asked why it was shying away from questioning Chidambaram when it had already interrogated BJP leaders and former ministers Jaswant Singh and Arun Shourie.
She also rebutted the government’s defence that the controversial 2G note sent by the Finance Minister to PMO was not reflective of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s views, saying a bureaucrat in the ministry could not have on his own sent note without clearance from his minister.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley meanwhile said the PM was living in denial, adding he has distanced himself from ground realities.
He was reacting to Singh’s defence of Chidambaram.
Jaitley said that instead of protecting tainted ministers, the PM should protect the truth.
“There is a crisis of leadership, crisis of credibility in the government,” he told the press conference.
He added that the government was collapsing under its own contradictions, and the opposition didn’t need to destabilise it, as claimed by the PM yesterday.
