21-year-old drowns in temple tank

PORAYAR: In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old engineering graduate from Chennai, R Gautham, drowned in the tank adjoining the Tirunallar temple on Saturday when he had gone there with his family to pray.

Police said Gautham, who was accompanied by his father and two sisters, decided to take a dip in the temple tank before offering prayers at the temple at about 4 a m. But the youth drowned while bathing. When they could not find him, his family members panicked and alerted people around them. Gautham's body was later found floating in the tank.

Gautham, a resident of Kovur in Chennai, had completed his BE mechanical in a private engineering college, and was all set to leave for Australia after he got an offer from a firm there.

The family members decided to visit the Thirunallar temple, which falls within the Union Territory of Puducherry, before Gautham left for Australia. However, the pilgrimage turned tragic for the family.
