167 KG OF HEROIN SEIZED IN PUNJAB IN LAST 10 MONTHS: PIL

In the last 10 months, various wings of the Punjab Police, Border Security Force (BSF) and Narcotics Cell have seized a total of 167 kg heroin in the state.
Between May 11 and 16, 123 kg of heroin has been seized from various parts. This was revealed in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one Baldev Singh Sirsa, a resident of Amritsar. In the PIL, he had alleged that there is a strong nexus between the politicians of Punjab and the smugglers. The High Court has directed the petitioner to appear in person in the next hearing.
Sisra has sought an independent probe by an agency like the CBI into the smuggling of intoxicants. Sisra has also provided a sequence of events of the several seizures (see box). The petitioner has submitted that during the hearing of a bail application of one of the accused, names of two Akali Dal leaders — Charanjit Singh Atwal and Sukhbir Singh Badal had surfaced.
