16-YR-OLD GIRL COMMITS SUICIDE
Kapurthala April 13:
A 16-year-old girl of Hussainpur village near here felt so tormented by her boyfriend’s proposition to elope with him that she took her own life by setting herself on fire on Friday.
Police have registered a case under section 306 of IPC against the accused, who is now absconding. According to DSP Sukhdev Singh Chhina, in her statement made in the presence of a magistrate, the victim had claimed that she had been having an affair with Kaannia, from the same village, for over three months and that, of late, he had started pressurizing her to elope with him.
Finding it difficult to deal with the situation, the victim set herself on fire and succumbed to her burns later in the day. He added that in an unsuccessful suicide attempt earlier, the victim had consumed a corrosive liquid on Thursday. She succeeded in her bid the next day and succumbed to her burns in the civil hospital here, where she had been rushed for treatment.
Refusing to accept the police version, the hapless mother of the victim refuses claimed the affair was one-sided and that her daughter had repulsed the advances of Kaannia.
