11 dead in 2 mishaps on Srinagar highway

UDHAMPUR: Eleven people died and another was critically injured in two road accidents on the Srinagar-Jammu high- way on Thursday morning.

According to reports, eight people died and another was critically injured when a Tata Sumo, JK 011 5283, on its way from Jammu to Srinagar, plunged into 800-foot-deep gorge near Battery Chashma, 165 km north of Jammu, when the driver couldn't negotiate a sharp curve and lost control over the vehicle.

Reports said that after get- ting information, a police team from Ramban reached the spot and launched rescue operations. Police evacuat- ed the bodies from the gorge and shifted them to the Ramban District Hospital for post mortem. The injured person was also rushed to hospital.

Out of the eight killed, six have been identified as Madan Massi, Swaran Massi and Mangi Massi, residents of Batala in Punjab; Mohamed Maqbool, resident of Budgam; Fiaz Ahmed, resident of Kupwara; and Gulzar Singh, resident of Batala in Punjab. The identity of two more killed could not be ascertained.

Meanwhile, in another road accident near Chanderkote Batote on the Jammu-Srinager highway, three people, includ- ing the driver and and clean- er of a truck died when the truck, JK 02 F 0842, met with an accident.

Reports said a rescue oper- ation was launched and the bod- ies were evacuated from the gorge. The dead were being identified.
