100 villages to be identified for laying sewerage

Under World Bank’s scheme of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project, about 100 villages in Punjab are being identified for laying sewerage.

Community mobilisation specialist Priya Ojha said this while convening an orientation meeting of Ropar and Fatehgarh Sahib officials.

She said work had been initiated for laying sewer pipes in most of the villages under the project. Kiratpur Sahib has been earmarked for the project in the state. Ojha added that the scheme had evoked good response and Rs 1,280 crore had been earmarked for potable drinking water for 3,161 villages by 2010.

“In order to ensure complete implementation of the project, World Bank, NABARD Bank and various government schemes are coordinating to bring the best to the people,” she said.

Meanwhile, the programme specialist said villages falling under general category would pay Rs 800 and reserved category Rs 400. As many as 31 villages of Changar area of Anandpur Sahib too are being included in the ambit of this scheme. — TNS
