Sachin Tendulkar: Life in pictures

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born in Mumbai on April 24, 1973. His father Ramesh was a novelist, and a young Sachin was encouraged to play cricket by his older brother Ajit. Tendulkar began his cricketing career at Sharadashram Vidyamandir High School, under the guidance of his coach and mentor, Ramakant Achrekar.

In 1988, aged just 15, Tendulkar generated a huge amount of hype by scoring a century in every innings he played. This picture from October 1991 shows a young Tundulkar (sixth from left) arriving at Dubai International Airport with the Indian cricket team ahead of the Sharjah Wills Trophy.

The highest run scorer in both Test matches and ODIs, Tendulkar (second from left) is also the batsman with the most centuries in either form of the game. The first player to score fifty centuries in all international cricket combined, he now has eighty-seven international centuries.

Tendulkar married his wife Anjali, a paediatrician, in 1995, and the couple have two children, Sara and Arjun. Pictured here with a young cancer patient in Mumbai, Tendulkar is known for his charity work, and sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO.

Pcitured here in Sharjah in 1991, Tendulkar played his first Test match in 1989, against Pakistan in Karachi, when he was just 16. In 1992, at the age of 19, Tendulkar became the first overseas born player to represent Yorkshire, playing 16 first-class matches for the county and scoring 1070 runs.

December 2000 and Tendulkar proudly displays the "Cricketer of the Year" award which he was presented at an awards function in Mumbai. He triumphed over team mates Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath in winning the trophy, one of many Tendulkar has amassed during his career.

This photo from 2002 shows Tendulkar giving German F1 Ferrari Driver Michael Schumacher a cricket lesson in the pits at the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone track in England.

Tendulkar cuts a ball on his way to an unbeaten 35th test century, during the first day of the second cricket test match against Sri Lanka in New Delhi, India, in December 2005. Tendulkar became test cricket's top century scorer when he posted his 35th hundred in the second test against Sri Lanka.

In 2008, Tendulkar became the leading run-scorer in Test Match Cricket history during the first day of the second Test match between India and Australia in Mohali, India. He crossed retired West Indian captain Brian Lara's tally of 11,953 runs from 131 Tests when he passed 15 on the first day of the match.

The batsman gestures to his teammates earlier this month on the fifth one-day international cricket match between India and Australia in Hyderabad, during which he made a record by scoring 17,000 runs in one-day internationals.

Sachin Tendulkar clocked another record on February 24, 2010 by becoming the first player to ever score a double century in one-day cricket.

On October 10, 2010, Tendulkar set yet another cricketing record, becoming the first player to reach 14,000 runs in Test cricket. Tendulkar achieved the milestone while playing against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Little Master also picked up his 49th century in the series.

In what is his umpteenth record-breaking feat, Tendulkar scored his 50th Test century on December 19, 2010 against South Africa.

India's Sachin Tendulkar looks skywards as he celebrates scoring his century during their ICC Cricket World Cup group B match against South Africa in Nagpur March 12, 2011. It was his 48th century in the ODIs.
