Background
Ronaldo, full name Ronaldo Luíz Nazário de Lima and nicknamed O Fenômeno (The Phenomenon), was born in the poor neighbourhood of Bento Ribeiro, Rio de Janeiro, in 1976. Playing in the streets, like so many other greats of his era, Ronaldo was eventually recognised when he was 14 and was later signed to Cruzeiro Esporte Clube and the Brazil under-17 squad.

World Cup history
His career really took off in 1994 when he made his international debut playing against Argentina. He had already scored numerous goals in as many matches and, although he never actually played in the ’94 world cup in the United States, he was already a member of Brazil’s senior squad.
Ronaldo continued to flourish in his international career and scored four goals in the 1998 World Cup, while scoring double that in the 2002 World Cup, which Brazil won. Ronaldo also collected the coveted Golden Boot with that fine display of eight goals, as well as equaling Pelé’s Brazil world cup goal scoring record of 12 goals. Ronaldo continues to score goals for Brazil as well as his current team, Real Madrid.
